Why This Matters
A new athletics track isn't just infrastructureâit's opportunity. Here's what it means for our community.
What's Happening
A major new development at Imberhorne will bring 550-700 new homes, a new school, and modern community facilitiesâincluding an athletics track. Planning approval was granted in January 2026.
Development Timeline:
- â Planning Approved: January 2, 2026
- âł Design Phase: Underway (Reserved matters)
- âł Construction Start: Expected 2026/2027
- âł Track Opening: Target 2027-2028
This is a one-time opportunity. We won't get another chance to build the right facility for another 20 years. What we ask for now shapes what East Grinstead athletics will look like for a generation.
Why It Matters
Health & Wellbeing
A proper athletics facility removes barriers to getting active. Track and field works for everyoneâsprinters, distance runners, jumpers, throwersâor just people who want to run laps, train for a 5K, or get outside.
Youth Opportunity
Young athletes need pathways. A complete track with jumps and throws means young people can discover what they're good at, develop confidence, and stay engaged with sport as they grow.
Community Pride & Legacy

Economic & Social Benefit
A well-designed, accessible facility draws people in. It strengthens clubs, builds school partnerships, and puts East Grinstead on the map for athletics.
Our Story: 48 Years Without a Track
EGAC was formed in 1978. For nearly half a century, we've built a thriving athletics community without a dedicated track. We've trained at borrowed facilities, traveled to competitions, and made do.
And we've achieved remarkable things. County champions. International athletes. Hundreds of young people discovering their love of sport. All without a home track.
That's a testament to the people hereâdedicated coaches, committed athletes, families who believe in what this community can be.
What We've Learned
We Need A Complete Track
A 400m track alone isn't enough. A proper facility includes jumps (long jump, high jump, triple jump) and throws (shot put, javelin, hammer). These disciplines are core to athletics. Without them, you exclude young people, limit competitive opportunities, and miss the chance to serve the full breadth of the sport.
Access Matters
The track needs to be genuinely accessible: safe parking, accessible facilities, affordable or free access for community groups, school programs, and beginners.
Community Design Works
When we shape this togetherâclubs, schools, council, parentsâwe get it right. This isn't just about athletes. It's about what the whole community needs.
What Success Looks Like
A complete athletics facility: 400m track, jump areas (long jump, high jump, triple jump), throws ring (shot put, javelin, hammer), warm-up areas, spectator facilities, accessible parking, and meeting space for clubs.
Built to England Athletics standards. Integrated into the community. Open to schools, clubs, and anyone who wants to get active.

We're asking for a complete athletics track, not a partial one. We're working with England Athletics, Imberhorne School, the developer, and the council to make sure this facility serves everyone.
